Copy Editing includes the basics of proofreading, but includes the following: correct faulty spelling, grammar, and punctuation; identify something that isn't clear or doesn't make sense; recognize redundancies and suggest substitute wording; ensure consistency in spelling, numbers, capitalization and names; flag or reword jargon; smooth out confusing sentences and ensure that any citations/notes are complete.
Line Editing concentrates on your story’s creative elements, like the writing style and language use in each sentence (or every line). While your line editor will also catch simple grammar errors, the main focal points are run-on sentences and unnecessary/overused words, information redundancies, shifts in tone, unnatural/inconsistent phrasing, confusing narrative and character dialogue, pacing improvements, overall story communication.
Proofreading includes correcting the following: typos, capitalization errors, inconsistencies, errors in grammar and incorrect punctuation. This should be the final step, after your book has been edited.
